144. Tuesday : My Sheep Hear My Voice: Listening and Doing the Works of Christ
How to Listen to Christ in Times of Noise
When Chaos Becomes Grace
In Acts of the Apostles 11, the persecution that followed the death of Saint Stephen scattered the disciples to Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. What appeared to be chaos became a path for growth, because the Gospel spread into new places. In Antioch, believers were first called Christians.
This reveals an important truth: events may look disordered on the surface, yet God can work through them for a greater purpose. Peace often comes not merely from vague belief, but from understanding truth more deeply through reason enlightened by faith. When truth is seen clearly, the heart becomes steadier.
Hearing Christ Above the Noise
Saint Paul stood amid suspicion, conflict, and division—feared by Christians and opposed by many. Yet he learned to follow the voice of Christ above the surrounding noise. That changed everything.
As Christ says in the Gospel of John 10:25:
Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
Through Catholic Baptism, a person receives the grace to live by faith. But faith must be lived actively: to listen to Christ, to obey His voice, and to do the works of the Father. Through such works, the believer gives witness to God.
Today’s Hidden Persecutions
Not all persecution is physical. Many present-day pressures wound the soul in quieter ways:
- constant distraction and digital overload
- confusion about truth
- ridicule of faith
- isolation and loneliness
- fear-driven news cycles
- materialism and mammon culture
- impurity presented as freedom
- anxiety and loss of inner peace
- division within families and communities
- silent pressure to conform
These can scatter attention just as persecution scattered the early disciples. Yet when rightly understood, they can also become occasions for deeper growth in Christ.
How to Listen to Christ and Bear Fruit
1. Grow in Awareness of Truth
A soul cannot follow the Shepherd if it does not recognize His voice. Daily reflection, study, and vigilance strengthen discernment.
Attend ChristusWay21, a 21-day online awareness program, to rediscover the treasures Catholics hold and learn practical habits of spiritual clarity.
2. Pray the Rosary Daily
The Rosary quiets inner noise, orders the mind, and leads the heart through the mysteries of Christ with Virgin Mary.
3. Live a Fundamental Catholic Life
Remain rooted in grace through prayer, repentance, the Sacraments, Holy Mass, Scripture, and fidelity to conscience. Life in the soul is stronger than life in appearances.
4. Practice Works of Charity
Forgive “seventy times seven.” Give alms of time, talent, and money. Pray for the needy, and intercede for the souls in purgatory. Love trains the heart to hear Christ clearly.
Final Reflection
The world is loud, but Christ still speaks.
The world distracts. Christ gathers.
The world confuses. Christ illumines.
The world pressures. Christ strengthens.
Blessed are those who hear His voice—and follow Him.
