Joyful Mystery 2–The Visitation (Charity)

God's presence overflows into love and service. Charity becomes the first fruit of grace.

Once Mary found favor with God, listened to the inspiration, and consciously said yes, the Word became flesh within her. The Annunciation reveals God's communication through grace and inspiration. Mary's free and conscious response opened the way for Christ to enter the world. Every faithful response to grace becomes a step upward toward the Eucharistic summit.

After receiving the Word of God at the Annunciation, Mary does not remain focused on herself. Carrying Christ within her, she immediately goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth. The Visitation reveals that authentic encounters with God naturally lead to charity, service, and communion with others. Charity is the manifestation of God's will. It is the flow of grace into action and the visible fruit of a soul cooperating with God.

St. Teresa of Ávila teaches that God dwells in the deepest center of the soul. As the soul becomes more aware of His presence, it is gradually transformed by His love. The closer we draw to Christ within, the more His life begins to shine through our thoughts, words, and actions. Charity is not merely a human effort but the fruit of God's presence living and working within us.

When Mary arrived at Elizabeth's house, Elizabeth immediately recognized the grace she carried and exclaimed, “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” She also proclaimed, “Blessed are you among women.” The presence of Christ within Mary brought joy, blessing, and spiritual awakening to those around her. In the same way, when we live in Christ's presence, others often sense that presence without us speaking about it. Our surroundings can experience peace, encouragement, hope, and blessing through the grace that overflows from a Christ-centered life.

The spiritual life requires a conscious awareness of inspirations and impulses. When inspirations originate from God and move the soul toward Christ, opposing impulses often arise to distract, discourage, delay, or turn the soul away from grace. The Christian journey therefore requires vigilance and discernment. Conscious awareness of both inspirations and impulses is important for those who seek to follow Christ faithfully.

The Visitation teaches that God's presence is never meant to remain hidden within ourselves. Like Mary, we are called to carry Christ to others. As the Rosary deepens our communion with Him, charity becomes the natural expression of the divine life growing within the soul. The grace received through prayer begins to overflow into love, service, and blessing for everyone around us.
